Figure 1a: Direct smear of a tracheal wash from a horse with skin lesions and coughing. The smear is highly cellular and contains stringy mucus (causing the cells to line up) and many eosinophils with low numbers of non-degenerate neutrophils (arrow), macrophages and mast cells (Wright’s stain, 10x objective)
