Virchow’s triad

Virchow's triad

In the 1800’s. Virchow first recognized several mechanisms for venous thrombosis. This was later called the triad, which consists of alterations in hemodynamic forces (more stasis than turbulence), endothelial dysfunction or injury, and changes in hemostasis, leading to excessive clot formation. Although listed separately. these conditions clearly overlap and in individual cases, likely multiple mechanisms are operative.
