This horse developed acute intravascular and extravascular hemolysis after ingesting red maple leaves in Fall. Numerous ghost red blood cells (arrows) and eccentrocytes (not shown) were evident on blood smear examination, which allowed identification of the cause of the horse’s anemia. The horse was responding to the anemia, as seen by the presence of several macrocytes (M, larger immature red blood cells) in the smear. A single neutrophil is also present (Wright’s stain).
