Poikilocytes in a cat with hepatic lipidosis

Poikilocytes

Various RBC shapes (mostly acanthocytes) are seen in this blood from a cat with lipidosis. These changes can be a hematologic marker of liver disease, most frequently lipidosis (but are not specific for lipidosis or liver disease). There are other shape changes, some of which cannot be labeled, but there are also echino-elliptocytes (arrowhead; holly-leaf shaped cell) and elliptocytes (arrow) (Wright’s stain, 1000x magnification).
