Reading a packed cell volume

To measure a packed cell volume (PCV) a microhematocrit tube is filled with blood, centrifuged and then the red blood cell column is measured. To perform the latter, the top of the plasma column and bottom of the red blood cell column are lined up on the 100% and 0% lines. The top of the red blood cell column is then obtained; in this case it is 38% (arrow).
