Granulopoiesis (in this case, neutrophilopoiesis is depticted) proceeds in an orderly and pyramidal fashion. The earliest precursor is the myeloblast, which is also the least abundant cell. As granulocytes differentiate, they become smaller, their nuclei become segmented and they acquire secondary granules, which defines the cell type (neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil). With each division, they become more abundant such that mature granulocytes (in this case band and segmented neutrophils) dominate in marrow.
