Metarubricyte in blood from an alpaca

A metarubricyte with condensed pyknotic nuclear chromatin and red cytoplasm is evident in this blood from a healthy camelid (alpaca). Camelids tend to have more nRBC in health than other species and frequently release them under various conditions in animals with or without anemia. Anemic animals may have nRBCs without other features of regeneration (polychromasia, macrocytes) (Wright’s stain, 100x objective)
