There are small round organisms on the edges of the red blood cells in this cow with a regenerative anemia due to Anaplasma marginale infection. The organism causes an extravascular hemolysis. Two macrocytes (large RBC) and a polychromatophil are present in the smear, indicating a regenerative response.
