Oropharyngeal contamination
In this tracheal wash from a horse, there are few tracheal or lower airway cells, but large numbers of extracellular bacteria, plant debris (arrow) and squamous epithelial cells (arrowheads), indicating oropharyngeal contamination (modified Wright’s stain).
