There were moderate to many polychromatophils in the blood smear (arrows), supporting a regenerative anemia. Polychromatophils were hypochromic, which could be due to the fact that these cells are leptocytic (with increased surface area to volume ratio) or iron-restricted erythropoiesis (not confirmed on our analyzer plots). There was also a subpopulation of hypochromic mature red blood cells (arrowheads). Automated hemogram results from our analyzer indicated iron-restricted erythropoiesis in mature red blood cells only. There were also low numbers of ovalocytes, which could be due to liver damage. 50x objective, modified Wright stain
