Monomorphic neoplastic intermediate to large cells are the predominant population, with low numbers of small lymphocytes (arrow) and plasma cells (arrowhead). The neoplastic cells have small amounts of light to medium blue cytoplasm containing 1-2 clear discrete margined cytoplasmic vacuoles. The nuclei are deeply convoluted with fine chromatin and contain 1-2 nucleoli. Many cells demonstrate cytoplasmic tailing and numerous cytoplasmic fragments can be seen in the background. They resemble the tumor cells identified in the blood smear. The cytologic diagnosis was intermediate to large lymphoma (rapid stain, 50x objective).
