The smear consisted of many neutrophils, which were moderately to markedly degenerate with swollen nuclei and cytoplasm. The cells also had fragmented shrunken dark nuclei (apoptosis, presumptive). Non-staining fungal hyphae (arrowheads) are difficult to discern among the inflammatory cells (modified Wright’s stain)
