Figure 5: Bone marrow aspirate from a horse with acute leukemia

There is an expansion of large mononuclear cells with high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratios and small amounts of light to medium blue cytoplasm. Nuclei are pleomorphic ranging from round to oval to monocytoid. The remaining cells are mostly monocytes (arrowhead), some of which are dysplastic (cell on upper far right), with fewer differentiating neutrophils (long arrow) and immature eosinophils short arrow). A mitotic figure is present on the middle left (50x objective, modified Wright’s stain).
