Direct smears of the aspirate contained many non-degenerate neutrophils and extracellular bacteria. Individual bacteria were slender wavy to spiral to seagull-shaped rods (arrows), some of which were forming short chains (arrowheads). Results indicated septic suppurative inflammation with Campylobacter species.
