A closer view of the neutrophil with a single large pale purple cytoplasmic inclusion, compatible with an LE cell (long arrow). Many also neutrophils contained variably-sized purple granular inclusions in their cytoplasm. Cells with these inclusions are often referred to as “ragocytes” or “ragocyte-like” cells (short arrows). Another neutrophil contains a darker and smaller cytoplasmic inclusion, likely a variant of an LE cell (arrowhead). There are also small lymphocytes (L) and macrophages or synovial lining cells (M); it is difficult to distinguish macrophages from synovial lining cells, since synovial lining cells can be of histiocytic origin. Overall, the results indicated an inflammatory polyarthropathy due to immune-mediated joint disease (100x objective, modified Wright stain)
