The mass consisted of anastomizing islands, cords and trabeculae of cuboidal to polygonal squamous epithelial cells forming keratin pearls (left hand side of image). There were multifocal areas of necrosis surrounded by inflammatory cells (center of image). The tumor extended to the cut margins (arrows) (H&E stain).
