Figure 3: Representative image of a direct smear prepared from a tracheal wash from a horse with smoke inhalation injury. Abundant inflammatory cells and a mucus spiral (arrow) are present (Wright’s stain 500x). Inflammatory cells are mostly neutrophils (nondegenerate) with fewer macrophages, some of which contain carbon in their cytoplasm.
