A flat sheet of medium to large epithelial cells with central nuclei and moderate amounts of medium to dark blue cytoplasm. There are binucleated cells and heterophils are observed invading the cells (arrows). Note how several epithelial cells have smooth blue cytoplasm with perinuclear vacuoles, features of squamous differentiation (arrowheads) (modified Wright’s stain).
