This image demonstrates paired organisms in red blood cells in a reindeer suffering from intravascular and extravascular hemolysis. The anemia was acute in onset, therefore there is no evidence of regeneration (polychromasia, basophilic stippling, macrocytes, nucleated RBC). A segmented neutrophil is also present in this smear (Wright’s stain, 1000x magnification).
