Hypersegmentation of neutrophils in a goat with cobalamin deficiency

In this liver impression smear, a giant hypersegmented neutrophil was noted. This unusual finding prompted consideration of cobalt/B12 deficiency or molybdenum excess. On further testing, the goat was found to be cobalt deficient. Note the mechanically detached mesothelial cells (arrow) (Wright’s stain, 100x objective). This image illustrates how blood findings can yield clues as to underlying pathology or disease.
