Erythrocytes and platelets in blood from an alpaca

Camelids normally have elliptical red blood cells (RBCs), which can fold as seen in the above image. Low numbers of spindle (fusiform) or tear-drop shaped RBCs (not depicted) may be seen in healthy non-anemic camelids. They usually have large numbers of platelets, which are quite small and granular (modified Wright’s stain, 100x objective).
