Marked neutrophilia in a dog

Leukocytosis

This dog had a marked leukocytosis (80,000/uL) consisting of a mature neutrophilia with a left shift (arrows) and monocytosis (M). Neutrophils were mildly toxic. The leukocytosis was secondary to sequestered inflammation (closed pyometra). Rouleaux formation is evident in the erythrocytes, indicating increased globulins (either fibrinogen and/or immunoglobulins, as part of the inflammatory response).
