Methemoglobinemia

A sample of the cat’s blood was centrifuged in a microhematocrit tube. The resulting supernatant is brown, compatible with methemoglobinemia. Lysis of red blood cells likely occurred with storage, releasing the oxidized hemoglobin from cells. Oxidant injury to the red blood cells may have also resulted in a degree of intravascular hemolysis (hemolysis not noted by referring veterinarian).
